Towards a Cooler, More Sustainable City – A Masdar Institute Research Project

Wed Dec 14, 2016
A research project at Masdar Institute aims to mitigate the undesired consequences of the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI) -- where city air and surface temperatures can be can be higher than those of nearby rural areas by 2 to 3° Celsius -- by creating a tool that will help city planners determine the energy impact of different urban design and energy strategies to incorporate into Abu Dhabi. Such strategies include the use of highly-reflective construction materials, evaporative cooling from ground ponds and roof ponds, vertical green surfaces, and central cooling systems like district cooling plants that don’t reject their waste heat into the urban environment.
